Summary

A deluxe edition of Orochi, featuring all nine of the classic interconnected short stories by horror master Kazuo Umezz, the creator of The Drifting Classroom

A mysterious young woman slithers her way into the lives of unsuspecting people like the legendary multitailed serpent for which she is named—Orochi。

The third volume of Umezz’s classic horror manga begins with “Stage,” in which Orochi encounters a child who insists a mysterious “morning-man” has killed his father。 But who is he really? Then, a group of stranded soldiers succumb to unimaginable depravity in order to survive。 In “Combat,” their story comes back to haunt them…and others。

I did not enjoy this one as much。 The fact that the stories are a lot longer kinda erases the punches the previous stories had and sometimes makes it feel a bit dragged (one could argue it's good horror skills to work dread throughout, but it's just not my favorite kind of horror)。At that point in my reading journey of Orochi, reading the last two stories, I'm well acquainted with the style, characters and themes, so I guess it would take a bit more to impress me, since the initial charm (which I did not enjoy this one as much。 The fact that the stories are a lot longer kinda erases the punches the previous stories had and sometimes makes it feel a bit dragged (one could argue it's good horror skills to work dread throughout, but it's just not my favorite kind of horror)。At that point in my reading journey of Orochi, reading the last two stories, I'm well acquainted with the style, characters and themes, so I guess it would take a bit more to impress me, since the initial charm (which I adored) has come and gone a little bit。Overall this selection of stories just wasn't for me。 The themes about revenge and war are just not what I usually like。 If I wasn't reading the whole trilogy and had fallen just on this book alone I probably wouldn't have read just because I would know right away that this is not the kind of story I usually connect with。Anyway, I'm glad I read it, I know that these stories, originally written in the 50's, have been pillars and foundation to the horror manga genres, so I'm glad to have added them to my general culture。 I can definitely see their influence in the work of other mangakas。 。。。more

Good gravy。 This series started out well - the first volume was pretty good, if a bit confusing, but it started to lose its mojo in the second volume, and then this happened。 The first story, "Stage", was a convoluted long game revenge story that was full of stuff that made no sense and convenient plot devices。 It annoyed me so much! "Combat," the second story, was better, but harsh and gut-punching; it recalls the Battle of Guadalcanal during WWII, and while I believe the story in the book is f Good gravy。 This series started out well - the first volume was pretty good, if a bit confusing, but it started to lose its mojo in the second volume, and then this happened。 The first story, "Stage", was a convoluted long game revenge story that was full of stuff that made no sense and convenient plot devices。 It annoyed me so much! Orochi plays the role of the observer only this time around, watching as two sons across two very different stories try to reconcile their feelings about their fathers。 Of the two, the longer, "Combat," is the stronger。 This isn't only because "Stage" is a truly convoluted revenge story, but more due to the fact that there's something intensely recognizable about the tale of Tadashi Okabe and his dad。 The senior Okabe was a soldier in WWII, and he's irrevocably scarred by his experiences, trying Orochi plays the role of the observer only this time around, watching as two sons across two very different stories try to reconcile their feelings about their fathers。 Of the two, the longer, "Combat," is the stronger。 This isn't only because "Stage" is a truly convoluted revenge story, but more due to the fact that there's something intensely recognizable about the tale of Tadashi Okabe and his dad。 The senior Okabe was a soldier in WWII, and he's irrevocably scarred by his experiences, trying as best he can to redeem himself from the boy he was at the time。 Tadashi, learning about his father's actions as a child in the post-war period, can't even begin to imagine that the world wasn't always as black-and-white as it appears to him, and his father's inability to really talk about what he did only makes things worse。 To say that I see my father's relationship with his father, who was also a soldier in WWII, would be disingenuous, and Umezz gets the dynamic so right that he must be writing from experience。While these are both still clearly horror stories, they're less about supernatural horror and more about the horror we make for ourselves。 War, revenge, and other uniquely human monstrosities are the villains of the piece, and it's when we fail to recognize what humanity is capable of that we create monsters to distract from who the real demons are。 。。。more

This manga, compiled of two short stories, was pretty good! I didn’t find them very scary or horror like, however。 Having never read the first two volumes i’m sure i don’t understand some of the interconnected parts, but i enjoyed it nonetheless! 4/5 stars :)
